Shadow Play

Yesterday’s theme for the Art Club at Pelham was silhouettes and shadows. We had a great time creating shadow puppets with artist, Karen Logan.

We began by developing ideas in our sketchbooks.

Once the drawings were complete everyone chose their favourite and transferred it onto black card.

Drawing our shadow puppets on black card

We had to think about this a bit differently, drawing each moving part separately, like in this example Karen gave us.

how to draw a shadow puppet on black card

To make a puppet with moving parts you have to draw each one, and remember to leave enough space for joining them up.

We then cut the parts of our puppets out carefully, and joined them up with butterfly clips. We also thought about how the light might shine through them and added eyes, windows and some bright cellophane for a dash of colour.

Once our puppets were finished it was time to dim the lights, shine the torch and try them out. We made up some short stories for our characters and put on a quick show.
