In the Mood

We made a creative start to the new year with our Look, Listen and Imagine workshop on 3rd January. Artist, Chrys Allen, led a fascinating day of investigation into how artists create mood in their paintings.

We began looking at works of Whistler, Rothko and Kandinsky to see what kind of moods they created in their work.

We talked about how mood can be expressed by colour and texture and made our own set of mood drawings.

We then listened to some different sounds, including some music from Chrys’ helper, Rudi, and drew the colours and the shapes that they conjured up for us.

After lunch we braved the crisp winter weather to take a mood walk round the grounds of the school, pausing to draw the atmosphere of the places we visited. We tried to capture the  echo of footsteps in the stairwell, the hum of distant traffic and the sweep of wind through the trees to create a visual record of our journey.

Back in the studio we worked together to transfer our marks onto a long scroll to make the sound of our journey.

Here’s just a small portion of it –

We took home lots of different ideas about how to show atmosphere in our own drawings. And heaps of mood pictures too.
