Kids school and holiday art clubs

A little puppet happening!

Inspired by a family day at the Whitechapel Gallery‘s Hannah Hoch exhibition last year; at Merton Park after school art club we decided to begin a project on puppets by looking at Hannah Hoch and the Da Da movement and create a little ‘happening’ of our own.

We chose from a selection of famous paintings from Art History books, cut them out and stuck them on board ready to create a new character. We would bring those old paintings to life again!

We searched through magazines to find interesting ways to change our character. They became spooky, surreal or down right crazy! New versions of the old masters.DSC_0019DSC_0023 DSC_0020DSC_0024 DSC_0025DSC_0032

We used diluted drawing inks to make brightly coloured washes over the photocopied prints.DSC_0027 DSC_0022DSC_0036

After mounting our chosen images onto box card we were ready to use a craft knife to cut them out (with careful supervision of course!)

We experimented with impromptu performance and the ‘happening’ began.

Next week we will add words and music to complete our slightly off the wall and unconventional performances! We may even use our group paintings that we made last week in response to music as a backdrop for our theatre…?DSC_0051 DSC_0055 DSC_0058 DSC_0059 DSC_0060 DSC_0061 DSC_0069 DSC_0073 DSC_0080DSC_0074 DSC_0082 DSC_0091
