Autumnal printed patterns

In our second session artist Veena Scialo returned as the regular tutor for the older children at Pelham Art Club.

She continued the pattern theme that I begun the week before when we looked at the work of Bridget Riley. This time the children were inspired by autumnal seed pods and made some lovely drawings which they developed into patterns .

They added colour and thought about repeating motifs.IMG_5016 IMG_5017 IMG_5018 IMG_5019 IMG_5020 IMG_5021

The following week Veena introduced them to the idea of making a pattern block to make a repeating pattern inspired by natural forms.IMG_8198 IMG_8200 IMG_8204

The children devised patterns by looking at seedpods againIMG_8207 IMG_8208 IMG_8209 IMG_8211 IMG_8220

The patterns were carved onto polystyrene blocks and used to print withIMG_8224IMG_8226IMG_8227IMG_8229IMG_8230

We rolled ink onto the block then carefully printed a repeating pattern onto different coloured papers.IMG_8223IMG_8231 IMG_8232 IMG_8233 IMG_8236Its magic when you lift off the printing block to reveal what lies underneath.

It requires lots of concentration to make sure you make sure the block is placed in the right place each time.IMG_5043IMG_5035

some of the finished results were quite complex!
