Impasto Impressions

This summer half term, the bigger artists and their teacher Veena Scialo, looked closely at Van Gogh and impasto painting techniques.

Using a simple paste prepared with water, flour, sugar and salt the children had fun creating their paints by adding powder paints.IMG_0084

We then experimented for most of the session with a range of tools to see which effects we can achieve.IMG_0088IMG_0092 IMG_0086

After our experiments with impasto paint we had a go at creating a yellow base colour with tumeric powder and white emulsion paint.IMG_0074IMG_0073

The texture was great and we uses this paint to prepare large sheets of cardboard with an undertone.IMG_0077

We then watched a video about Van Gogh’s Wheatfield with Cypresses and made a start on our own copies of this famous painting.IMG_0063 IMG_0070

In our third session this half term we watched once more a painting demonstration on youtube and us adults took turns painting so the children could follow. The children learned about composition and painting with different textures using a range of brushes and palette knifes.

Next up, we looked closely at the famous Sunflower paintings and we had a look at the five different versions kept in different galleries around the world.IMG_0048

After watching a demonstration our young artists created some very successful paintings on A5 hardboard.IMG_0051

During the last session we looked at all their paintings to finish them with more attention to detail.IMG_0054 IMG_0056 IMG_0053

The children really enjoyed walking in Vincent’s footsteps and couldn’t wait to bring their masterpieces home.IMG_0052

We tried our best to keep their school uniforms safe, however some little spillages could not be avoided.
